The best sunsets in the world (at least in my world)
What is your favorite time of day? If you chose sunset, you have come to the right place. I invite you on a virtual walk through some of the best sunsets in the world, at least in the world I have visited so far.
The light becomes the protagonist, dominates the sky and disguises the horizon with fiery colors tinged with fleeting nuances. The day dies. And that small daily death usually leaves a wisp of nostalgia in the soul of those who contemplate it. Perhaps that is why there are sunsets that are difficult to forget, that sometimes come to mind involuntarily and that I keep with care in my particular drawer of memories because they have the power to immediately transport you to that corner of the world.

Here are some of my best sunsets, those that occasionally wander through my memory to bring a smile of satisfaction to my face. If I manage to make one appear on your lips, even if it is barely imperceptible, I will have achieved my goal.
Myanmar, magic turned sunset
They say that the sunset over the temples of Bagan is one of the best sunsets in the world and, honestly, whoever dared to make such a bold claim was not lying. In silence, almost alone, unable to tear my eyes away from the horizon to manage to place them on the camera’s viewfinder. Totally mesmerized, with a strange sensation between happiness and nostalgia fluttering in my stomach, that’s how I enjoyed this unforgettable sunset. Such nostalgia for Myanmar… By the way, the sunrise in Bagan deserves another section.
Japan, the most exotic sunset
The symbol of Miyajima Island is, without a doubt, the gigantic torii that welcomes you to the Itsukushima Shinto shrine. When the tide rises in the Seto Inland Sea, this sacred gate seems to float on the water. If you add a sky painted in pinks and violets to that moment, you have one of the most exotic and beautiful sunsets possible.
United States, sunset over the Grand Canyon
Sunset in the Grand Canyon is another of the ultimate travel moments. Although here the sunset was not complete due to childhood needs that are irrelevant now, the mere contemplation of the first timid rays of dusk caressing this millenary geological formation was enough of an appetizer to return to the campsite with the feeling of having eaten the main course.
Bolivia, the sunset capable of curing all ills
Reaching the Pampas del Yacuma, in Rurrenabaque, was an adventure in itself. However, this patch of Amazonian jungle that promised so much turned into the only disappointment of the two-month trip through South America due to the combination of a suffocating heatwave and a mosquito invasion.
In exchange, it gave me one of the most special sunsets I have ever seen, the only one that has made me unable to stick with just one photo. So much so that I have promised myself to dedicate more words to it to try to make you feel at least part of the atmosphere that surrounded it.
Croatia, the most famous sunset on the Adriatic
In the port of Zadar there wasn’t a soul’s worth of space and as soon as the sun began to hide I discovered why. The sunset in this city on the Dalmatian coast is world-famous and, as if it were a Croatian Ibiza, it attracts hundreds of people to see the sunset over the Adriatic Sea.
Switzerland, fire over the Alps
Classic sunsets with the sea in the background found a tough competitor after seeing an epic one in the mountains of Interlaken. After a disappointing day of storms, before leaving, the sun decided to pay homage to the most majestic triad of peaks in the Swiss Alps: Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. A magical moment impossible to forget.
Thailand, the sun as the absolute protagonist
My first solo trip was one of the most enriching life experiences of my life. But besides giving me one lesson after another, it left a mark on my memory because of sunsets as impressive as this sun setting the sky on fire in front of a hidden beach in Koh Tao.
Chile, the most remote sunset
Sometimes a sunset doesn’t need to be brutally spectacular to be special. This sunset next to the skeleton of a ship aground in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago is the best example. Perhaps it was because of the remoteness of the place, in the heart of the Strait of Magellan, or because I arrived with my heart heavy with emotion after having just seen the huge King penguins in Bahía Inutil.

Israel and its sunsets over the Dead Sea
When you travel with low expectations, surprises are usually major. That’s what happened to me on my two-week trip through Israel. Besides breaking down false beliefs, I brought back in my backpack a deliciously beautiful sunset on the shores of the Dead Sea. One of those that you don’t look for, but that finds you instead.

Botswana, the wildest sunset
Africa carries a thousand and one labels. But the special light it displays makes this continent a paradise for sunsets. As a small sample, this photo taken in the Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana, where a diligent giraffe agreed to pose as a model.
A dazzling sun said goodbye in style before hiding in the Chobe National Park. From the boat taking me back to Kasane, I contemplated this fire in the sky surrounded by timid elephants and hippos that preferred not to be photographed. No matter, I still have them intact in my mind.
Namibia, just before the sun falls
The Etosha National Park is a perfect place to go on safari with your own 4×4. But keep in mind that, for safety, the campsites inside the park close their gates just as the sun sets. Luckily, just before that, I enjoyed this view…
Philippines, sky tinged with pink
Almost every day, the paradise islands of the Philippines boasted a special sunset. But the most beautiful of all, without a doubt, was this one in small and magical Siquijor. I’m not quite sure if I remember it with such emotion because of the colors the horizon was made up with or because of the good company I enjoyed it with.
Alaska, the midnight sun that thought it was a sunset
During more than three weeks of adventure through Alaska in a motorhome, I never saw the moon. A difficult mission if you travel in June when there is almost 24 hours of light. Even so, already on my second dawn, in Seward I feasted my eyes on the famous Midnight Sun adorning the mountains. The closest thing to a sunset…
New York, sunset from a sailboat
Not only do the last rays of sun doodle on landscapes, they also take great care, and a lot, in cities. From a sailboat, I witnessed one of the most beautiful sunsets I remember with the Statue of Liberty as the protagonist. Quite an experience that we recommend for discovering New York from another point of view.
Hong Kong, the most urban sunset
Another example that in big cities you can also enjoy the last moments of the day was in Hong Kong. In Victoria Bay, next to the largest port in all of Asia, the sun hid protected by the skyscrapers.
Costa Rica, the day dies next to a volcano
I was far from the only one that afternoon contemplating the sunset at Lake Arenal, right next to the immense active volcano of the same name. Dozens of people went there with their chairs and beers to attend the show. Costa Rica was my first solo trip and perhaps that’s why this sunset is so special.
