The charming Óbidos at Christmas is transformed thanks to Óbidos Vila Natal. If this small medieval walled village is already, throughout the year, one of the essential places to see in Portugal thanks to the beauty of its old town, in December it becomes one of the most sought-after destinations in our neighboring country.
The reason why many decide to travel to Óbidos at Christmas is to enjoy the magic of Óbidos Vila Natal, the best Christmas leisure offering for children in Portugal. And for this 2025 they have already confirmed the dates when it will be set up: it will be from November 28, 2025, to January 4, 2026.
Important update: The program for this edition of Obidos Vila Natal 2025-2026 has not yet been published. As soon as it is announced, it will be explained in detail here; meanwhile, you have last year’s information.
There are many quintessential Christmas destinations and Portugal is not, a priori, one of them. However, Óbidos has insisted on stealing the spotlight from Europe’s most popular Christmas markets and does so with its best weapon, Vila Natal, a carefully designed Christmas installation embraced by a medieval wall and protected by an imposing castle. Without a doubt, it is the best possible location for children and adults alike to dive into the magic of Christmas in Óbidos.
Óbidos Vila Natal, the most magical place in Portugal at Christmas
Óbidos Vila Natal offers a multitude of activities for the little ones inside the walled grounds of Óbidos castle. Depending on the year, they install a skating rink, an ice slide, a small train, two stages for shows, an activity tent, a bridge circuit, trampolines, a virtual reality simulator…
Additionally, there is a small Christmas market scattered throughout the grounds with food stalls and others for souvenir shopping. All this is seasoned with Christmas decorations everywhere, a life-size Nativity scene (I don’t know if they will continue setting it up this 2024), candy canes, snowmen, a magical set to play and take photos in, and of course a large Christmas tree.
But at Óbidos Vila Natal they have also thought about enlivening the Christmas spirit for the whole family. Therefore, elves and various characters, as well as a reindeer and a gingerbread cookie, wander around greeting and chatting with the children. The most dance-loving little ones will have a blast when the music plays on the outdoor stage and they can follow the choreographies led by the entertainers.

Enchanted Cabin (Santa Claus’s House)
The highlight of Óbidos Vila Natal is Santa Claus’s house, Pai Natal in Portuguese. Before leaving the enclosure, on the right, they have set up some charming little houses where children pass through a dance floor with lights, a hall of mirrors, and a set to take fun Christmas photos (the photo has an extra cost). All while waiting their turn to enter and see Santa Claus, who receives everyone with great affection and, in perfect Spanish, asks them what gift they want to receive. That’s how it was set up when I went; now I don’t know exactly how it will be, but surely just as magical.
Children can personally hand Santa Claus the letter given to them at the entrance. Tip: bring a pen or pencils so they can fill it out and avoid some frustration. Additionally, there used to be a beautiful sleigh with reindeer figures decorating the exterior of the enchanted cabin at Óbidos Vila Natal, which is the perfect setting for a family photo and for them to play at getting on and off.
Shows at Óbidos Vila Natal, curtains up!
With the entrance to Óbidos Vila Natal, you have access included to various performances that usually have several showings. The photos you see here are from 2022 and do not correspond to the new shows you will be able to see this holiday season.
This year they have created two spaces with two different themes: the Enchanted Kingdom Theater and the Stars Stage. Usually, one is an outdoor stage and the other is covered.
Remember, the Vila Natal shows are free. They are included with the entrance fee.
In this edition, the official website does not give too many details about either the shows you can see or their schedules, as they have done in previous years. When I was there with my children, we were able to see magic shows, soap bubbles, and giant puppets. Honestly, we all liked them quite a bit, both adults and children.
This 2024, the only thing they’ve shared ahead of time is that there will be elves, reindeer, and forest beings, along with a type of television program that promises quite a bit of humor.
What is missing this 2024 is the programming for concerts, parades, and other activities that used to take place in the streets of the village, outside the Óbidos Vila Natal enclosure. Nothing has been published about this on the village’s official page either.
Attractions at Óbidos Vila Natal
In addition to Santa Claus’s house and the shows, there is much more to do at this great Portuguese Christmas festival. Take note of the recurring attractions and the new ones arriving:
Ice Slide
Without a doubt, this is a classic that is present every year, although they change its name. This 2024 it’s called the Villagers’ Frozen Mountain. It is a large ice slide to slide down while riding on a large float. It’s usually only for little ones aged 4 and up, but watch out because adults have a blast here too (I can attest to that). This attraction is free, as it is included in the entrance price.
Another paid activity is the ice skating rink. The price is 6 euros for 15 minutes of access. Note that only children over 6 years old can skate here.
Aldeia dos Penteadores
This 2024 it seems that much of the theme is centered on the Enchanted Kingdom, inhabited by magical forest beings, nymphs, goblins, and fairies. Specifically, the latter, specifically the Crinx fairies, are the stars of this activity where they will become hairdressers to fill the hair of children with color, glitter, and magic, creating a very special look. Your children can enjoy this free activity as long as they are not over 14 years old.
Snow Fairy School
Following the previous theme, here the creatures will learn, in a very creative way, many concepts about snow from two very special beings: Nevo, the grumpy elf, and Neva, the Snow Fairy. Once again, this activity is also free as it is included in the entrance.
Fairy Studio
Certainly, if your children like fairies, they are going to have a great time this year at Óbidos Vila Natal. This is one of the corners that is always successful because it’s for face painting. Children will transform into fairies and elves during a very artistic face painting session. I recommend going at the beginning to avoid lines because you don’t always get the chance to have face painting for free.
Winter Greenhouse
After getting ready, it’s time to get dirty! During this small workshop, they will enjoy getting their hands dirty with clay while discovering how to preserve flowers during the coldest time of the year.
Enchanted Adventure
It’s time for the most active little ones to release adrenaline and move to burn off energy. And the best place to do it is on the trampolines for non-stop jumping. When I was there, there was also a circuit of small walkways and ropes where they could demonstrate their balance and skill. Another activity that is included in the entrance and is permitted up to 14 years of age.
Enchanted Portal (Virtual Reality)
Adults also have the right to have fun, and a good place to do so is in this virtual reality simulator that will take you to incredible places in this enchanted kingdom that defines this edition. There isn’t just one simulator, but several stations with different proposals and games. The good thing about 2024 is that, for the first time, many of them are free, though not all.
Christmas Tree Carousel
Now it really is time to pull out the wallet if they want to get on this attraction consisting of a large Christmas tree with giant baubles that spin, which the little ones ride in. The ticket costs 3 euros and entitles you to one ‘ride’. If they want to go, keep in mind that it is outside the grounds, specifically in the Praça de Táxis de Óbidos, a small esplanade that you will find upon exiting through the Porta da Vila. At that same spot, in other years, they used to set up a giant ferris wheel.
Little Train
The little train is already a classic of Óbidos Vila Natal and the little ones love it. A ride costs 3 euros. This 2024 it will be set up outside the grounds, specifically in the Praça de Santa María.
Skating Rink
There was another attraction that never fails at this great Portuguese Christmas party: the ice skating rink. This 2024 they have decided to give it a name very much in line with the year’s theme: Frozen Elven Plain. If you want to venture across this plain, you have to pay 6 euros for fifteen minutes of skating. However, children under 6 years old are unfortunately not allowed entry.
How much does it cost to enter Óbidos Vila Natal
Tickets can be purchased in advance online through this official website. These are the tickets and prices for Óbidos Vila Natal that you can buy online:
General admission for those over 12 years old costs 10 euros.
Children’s ticket from 3 to 11 years old pay 8 euros.
Children under 3 years old enter for free.
If you want to buy tickets directly there at the box office, you will see that you have other ticket options, such as family packs:
2 Adults + 2 Children: 32 Euros
2 Adults + 3 Children: 39 Euros
2 Adults + 4 Children: 46 Euros
You can also access these tickets at a reduced price, but again, only by buying them there in person:
Seniors over 64 and students up to 25 (presenting a student ID) pay 9 euros.
People with disabilities 8 euros and children with disabilities 6 euros (in both cases, they must prove a disability greater than 60%).
There are two ticket offices where you can buy tickets. One known as the Santiago ticket office is the one you see in the photo above, located in front of the Sao Tiago church, right where Rua Direita ends. This one opens at 10:30 in the morning, which is half an hour before the opening of Obidos Vila Natal, and closes an hour and a half before the grounds do.
The other ticket office is located at the famous Porta Da Vila, the main access to the walled grounds. In this case, as it is further from where Obidos Vila Natal is held, the ticket office opens at 10:00 in the morning and closes two hours before the grounds do.

Enchanted Cabin to visit Santa Claus / Sliding down the Ice Ramp / Watching the shows / Aldeia dos Penteadores / Snow Fairy School / Fairy Studio / Enchanted Adventure / Winter Greenhouses / Enchanted Portal (Virtual reality – not everything) / Animation and face painting and, of course, the craft market.
This 2024, there are three paid activities:
- The little train of the Plaza Station. The youngest children love getting into the wagons and can do so for 3 euros per ride. This edition they have located it in the Praça de Santa María.
- The ice skating rink (Frozen Elven Plain). The price for skating for 15 minutes is 6 euros. Only children over 6 years old can enter. If children need to rent one of the support brackets to make skating easier, an extra 2 euros must be added.
- The Christmas tree carousel. An attraction for the little ones that will spin them around riding in giant decorative balls around a Christmas tree. It also costs 3 euros.
Óbidos Vila Natal 2024, dates and times
Each year the dates change. In 2024, Óbidos Vila Natal is open from December 6 to January 6.
Here are the updated 2024 schedules:
Monday to Thursday: from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM.
Days with different schedules:
On the 30th, from the 4th to the 7th, and from the 11th to the 14th of November, Obidos Vila Natal closes at 6:00 PM.
On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, December 24 and 31, it closes at 6:00 PM.
IMPORTANT: On Christmas December 25 and January 1 it remains closed.
Are there options to eat inside?
Inside the enclosure, you will find various food stalls. Those with a sweet tooth can delight their palate with a crepe sweet, chocolate bonbons, or various sweets and pastries. Children will want to try the sweet popcorn and the eye-catching cotton candy. You can also warm up with some roasted chestnuts over a bonfire, with a hot chocolate, or a powerful shot of Ginja, the intense cherry liqueur typical of Portugal.
If you are inside at lunchtime, there are about four or five fast food stalls offering hamburgers, hot dogs (cachorros), bifanas (traditional Portuguese marinated pork sandwich), hot broth, and even bacalhau à Brás (scrambled cod with egg and straw potatoes) which could be eaten for 8 euros. To give you an idea, for about €9 you have a menu with a hamburger (or bifana or hot dog), fries, broth, and a coffee, drink separate.
Where to stay in Óbidos
This Portuguese town is very touristy, so the range of accommodation is very wide. You have many options for sleeping both inside the historic center and outside.
When I was there with my partner and my three little ones, I booked for the same day two nights at Charming Óbidos Townhouse, an apartment with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and an outdoor patio with barbecue for €80 per night, but with time and depending on the season, you can find it for around €68.
It is outside the wall, but barely a three-minute walk away; also, from the balcony, you can see the castle and the wall illuminated for Christmas. My experience there with three small children was very good, and in summer the patio with an outdoor table, sun loungers, and barbecue must be great. Highly recommended!
If you prefer a hotel and also want it to be something special, I would stay at The Literary Man Óbidos Hotel, a unique 4-star hotel inspired by literature, the largest in the world with up to 40,000 books inside. This is because Óbidos is considered a Literary Town by UNESCO.
Óbidos, Christmas at every corner
The Óbidos Vila Natal is the main attraction of the town at the end of the year, but even if it didn’t exist, it would still be worth going because the magic of Christmas seeps into every corner. The battlements of the wall that embraces Óbidos light up at night, creating a beautiful serpent of light surrounding the town.
Rua Direita, the narrow cobbled main street that takes you from one end to the other, becomes a sort of Christmas passage adorned with decorations and lights and dotted with charming shops where you can buy a Christmas ornament or taste the traditional ginja, an intense cherry liqueur, in a shot glass made of chocolate. Óbidos is also famous for this sweet; in fact, every year it hosts the International Chocolate Festival.
Make a stop halfway down Rua Direita because the huge Óbidos Christmas tree awaits you, which they sometimes also install in Praça Santa María, in front of the eponymous church, where, on the side, there are usually stalls for something hot to drink.
More of these Christmas stalls where you can buy bonbons and grab a bite await you at the end of Rua Direita, after crossing the beautiful Porta Da Vila, the main walled entrance to the Óbidos fortress with an unexpected interior of tiles and at Christmas. When I was there, we saw it decorated with a giant bow and the figures of some huge Three Wise Men.
There was also the ferris wheel that in 2021 allowed you to see Óbidos from a bird’s eye view. This 2024 you will find another attraction in its place.

Is travel insurance necessary for Portugal?
My answer is yes. Although obviously it is not mandatory, I recommend always traveling with your back well covered because you never know what might happen.
Even if you have obtained the European Health Insurance Card, bear in mind that in Portugal there is still healthcare co-payment in some medical emergencies. Furthermore, that card does not cover other types of unforeseen events such as loss of luggage or cancellation.
I recommend taking out travel insurance to go much more relaxed. I always use Mondo insurance because their family policy is very comprehensive and has the best price/coverage ratio. Also, I love their app through which you have access to pediatric video consultation or 24-hour medical chat through which you can contact a medical professional at any time. The peace of mind this service gives, especially when traveling with children, is priceless.
Can you imagine getting sick or having an accident and not knowing how to speak Portuguese, or even managing English? Besides feeling unwell, the nerves kick in. Thanks to the telephone assistance of travel insurance, you will have someone on the other end helping you, explaining how to proceed, and finding the nearest medical center to go to.
